Summer is Here

Actually, it's freezing down here, but the northern summer is conference time! Later this month the northern hemisphere sees both Loops 07 in Mexico and Strings 07 in Spain. Closer to home in early July, we have GRG18 in Sydney (conference venue in photo). No doubt many other interesting conferences are also coming up soon.

In other news, I am quite saddened to see this mysterious message on Lieven Le Bruyn's blog page. Good thing I printed out his helpful maths lessons. Bloomsday is June 16, which is only next week. I wonder what Homeric epic Lieven has to tell us. Also, keen followers of this blog should definitely take a look at the wonderful links on this Cafe post. Thanks, David.

As Tommaso points out, we must not forget Pascos 07 in London in early July. Have fun, Tommaso.

Kea, sorry to have worried you. It's mainly a server-problem forcing me from time to time to make my site unavailable.

I've posted a message, but when it will be unavailable again, please allow me to cross-post it here :

Bloomsday-end of NeverEndingBooks

From time to time you may see a message that NevenEndingBooks ends on Bloomsday (June 16th). Soon after, I hope to restart with another blog at the same URL.

For starters, Neverendingbooks refers to my never-ending bookproject on noncommutative geometry which started in 1999, a millenium ago... Today I'm correcting the proofs and have even seen the cover-design of the book which is supposed to be published this fall. So, it should be really EndingBook(s), finally.

From time to time it is good to start afresh. The next project is still pretty vague to me but it will be a lot more focussed and center around topics like Moonshine, the Monster, the Mathieu groups, Modular forms and group etc. Suggestions for a blogtitle are welcome (M-theory is already taken...).

Besides there are technical problems with the machine running the blog and Ive bought a new one which is expected around June 16th. As I will not be able to clone between the two (one PPC, the new one Intel) I decided to start again from scratch.

Anyway, Ive made a database-dump of NeverEndingBooks and will make it available to anyone interested in reading old posts (even the ones with a private-status).

Finally, as always when I make drastic decisions, there are other reasons, which are better kept private. Give me a couple of weeks to resurface. For now, all the best. lieven.

It's really hot here now in the UK. Will have to get the portable air conditioner out of the garage for my bedroom soon. Wish I was loopy enough to get an invite to Loops 07 in Mexico... nevermind, maybe next year.

"Really hot" in the UK means temperatures that would have someone living in the tropics quite comfortable. I'm sure Ramanujan would have agreed with me on this.

Dear Lieven, thank you for clarifying the situation. I am really glad to hear about a real book!

The next project is still pretty vague to me but it will be a lot more focussed and center around topics like Moonshine, the Monster, the Mathieu groups, Modular forms and group etc.

How exciting! So many M words. I'm sure you'll come up with a nice blog title ... hmmm ... like Monster Madness, or maybe Medusa's Moonshine ... sorry, I can't get those M words out of my head.

Hi Kea,

don't forget Pascos 07... Which I will attend for a few days (am presenting a talk there, titled "Boring SM tests at the Tevatron", or something like that).

I doubt I will be sunbathing in London though.
Cheers,
T.
