Can you upgrade to Blogger's new template? I.e. go under Template/Customize Design. Then you can under Layout, you can utilize "page elements" to add new side-bars. E.g., "labels" (which you can name as "category") for cartoon, photo, M-Theory lesson, outdoor. They have cool page elements like Youtube videos (there are nice Kea videos), photo slide-show, news, etc. See for example:

You might want to put a nice photo at top (do it under Layout). The current photos you have are hidden behind the blog-entries..can't see them entirely.
Bee's Backreaction uses that neat widget "Hackosphere", which has a side-bar for "recent comments". That way, people can see comments to AF's older posts.
