Fortunately, it appears that nobody was injured in today's large earthquake, which measured 7.8 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was some distance from population centres, but I suspect that almost everyone in the South Island felt this one.

Of course, wikipedia already has it on the the list ... faster than the news.
I wouldn't have liked to have been mountain climbing there when that happened!
As someone who was near the epicentre said, they were 'shaken but not stirred.'
Perhaps we'll someday see earthquakes as rumblings of a tiny Black Hole beneath our feet.
